"Learn about our service and how to use our resources"
The UK Data Service provides access to, and support for, the use of an extensive range of key economic and social data, spanning many disciplines and themes. Find out about us.
Our search and browse application, Discover, provides access to data and related resources, such as case studies, support guides and publications. Discover contains over 6,000 digital data collections for research and teaching purposes.
Using our data
Anyone can register for our service but access to our resources may differ depending on your affiliation.
To register with us you will firstly have to obtain a username and password from the UK Data Archive. Once these have been supplied to you, you can then register with the UK Data Service. For details on how to register see our information for other UK users or non-UK users.
Yes you can, but the UK Data Service contains very little information which may be of use to genealogists tracing their ancestors. However, you may find our genealogy page useful as this contains links to other websites that may of interest.
Information on how to download or order data from our collection is available from our download/order pages.
Most survey datasets are available to download in SPSS, Stata and tab-delimited (suitable for use in MS Excel) formats.
For further details see our FAQ about the data formats we provide.
Each study has a Discover record and details of any restrictions will be found in the 'Access conditions' section.
We have a number of studies that are available to use without the need to register with us. Further details are available from our open access data page.
The UK Data Service website will be undergoing an upgrade to our systems from Thursday 23 August until Wednesday 29 August inclusive. Some parts of the current website, account area and data catalogue will be unavailable. Normal services are expected to resume on 30 August 2018. We apologise for any inconvenience.
